Wow! Most Expensive Dog In The World Ever Sold

  • The most expensive dog in the world is a golden-haired Tibetan mastiff puppy that was reportedly sold for a staggering $2 million in China.

It is time to talk about some of the most expensive items in the world. And to start that category we shall be discussing about the most expensive dog in the world.

It might come as a shocking fact to some people that real money is spent on items and animals that belong to the list of inconsequential things in their lives.

But the story changes when there is enough money to spend. And even for a dog, the price tag is so huge that it could easily change the economic narrative of certain states in some third world countries, during this pandemic.

They say “a dog is man’s best friend” and for some rich folks, spending millions on a dog is one of the easiest ways to appreciate that friendship.

And that is exactly what this post is all about? A dog whose friendship was acquired with 12 million yuan.

The exact breed is what is known as the Tibetan Mastiff. And they come with the most expensive price tags among dogs.

The Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan mastiff  is used by local tribes of Tibetans, Nepalis and Indians to protect sheep from wolves, leopards, bears sheep from wolves, leopards, bears, large mustelids and tigers. It is known for its loyalty and has been used as a nomad dog for thousands of years

They are fed an organic diet of tripe, boiled fish heads, powdered egg shells, code liver oil and raw bones to help them clean their teeth.

Marco Polo supposedly encountered Tibetan Mastiffs in the 13th century, describing them as ‘tall as a donkey with a voice as powerful as that of a lion’.

Owners of the breed have included Queen Victoria, King George IV and  Genghis Khan – who supposedly took 30,000 of the dogs with his army in his bid to conquer Western Europe

1. Golden Hair Tibetan Mastiff – $1.95 million

The most expensive dog in the world is a golden-haired Tibetan mastiff puppy that was reportedly sold for a staggering $2 million in China. And that was in 2014.

The Tibetan Mastiff was sold at a premium pet fair in the eastern province of Zhejiang on Tuesday, fetching 12 million yuan which is approximately $1.95 million.

“They have lion’s blood and are top-of-the-range mastiff studs,” said the dog’s breeder, Zhang Gengyun.

The most expensive dog in the world was 31 inches tall, and weighed about 200 pounds at the time it was sold.

“Pure Tibetan mastiffs are very rare, just like our nationally treasured pandas, so the prices are so high,” he said.

According to reports the Tibetan Mastiff was bought at the Zhejiang expo the buyer, who is said to be a 56-year-old property developer from Qingdao, who hopes to breed dogs himself. 1

The red Tibetan mastiff has become a status symbol in China, replacing jewellery and cars as a way for the super-rich to show off their wealth.

2. Tibetan Mastiff “Big Splash” – $1.5 Million

Most Expensive Dog In The World

In 2011, a Chinese business tycoon paid for a purebred Red Tibetan Mastiff named Big Splash. It was sold for $1.5 million and became the most expensive dog in the world as at that time.

Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, was bought by a coal baron from the north of China.

According to the breeder “We have spent a lot of money raising this dog, and we have the salaries of plenty of staff to pay” But is that a justifiable reason for the huge price tag?

It is said that the Tibetan Mastiff can only have one litter a year. And for one like Big Splash, the new owner can make almost £10,000 a time for the dog to breed with a female.

According to James Pally, a Tibetan mastiff breeder from Pantymwyn near Mold in Flintshire, North Wales:

‘They are very smart and they think for themselves and can sense danger very acutely.

‘Tibetan mastiffs were originally used to guard the livestock and they are very good with other animals and they love children.

‘I have six of them and if you don’t give them enough attention they sit in front of the TV.’ 2

The Tibetan mastiff is the dog breed with the highest price tag ever negotiated, for the ownership of a dog. But that was some years ago. Today, the Tibetan mastiff has been abandoned and go for around $2,000.

How has the mighty fallen!
